Military operation against the militants in a Pakistani tribal region will displace nearly 600, 000 people, an international aid agency said on Thursday. Save the Children estimates that over 600,000 people in total will be displaced from the Khyber agency if security operations continue, of which over 300,000 are expected to be children. The recent influx of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from the region began in January and intensified in mid-March as operations in the area increased. Since then, approximately 63,000 families have been displaced and moved to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The recently displaced families join an estimated total of 144, 104 displaced families from previous conflicts in the area, which have been ongoing since 2009. According to United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), approximately 1,200 individuals are currently being registered at the Jalozai camp daily compared to up to 10,000 during mid-March. Government authorities anticipate that the IDPs will remain displaced till the end of the year, thereby requiring humanitarian aid for the newly displaced people. Only 28 percent of the Humanitarian Operational Plan (HOP) devised last year for addressing the needs of displaced communities from FATA has been raised to date. Continued funding shortfalls will result in severe constraints on the ability of humanitarian agencies to deliver lifesaving aid to the affected population, Save the Children said in its update. Over 90 percent of new IDPs are staying off-camp, living in rented spaces or with host families. It is imperative to assist the off-camp IDPs, as very limited relief services are reaching them. As most IDPs are women and children who belong to a conservative culture, they are unwilling to live in camps and many are unable to access relief services. IDPs living with host communities say that they don’t expect to go home within the next twelve months. As host communities struggle to cope with the influx of IDPs, local media is reporting that the security operation in Khyber Agency is intensifying and more people are fleeing their homes in search of safety.

The Washington Examiner counts no less than 28 celebrity fundraisers for Obama held over the last year. Indeed, the incumbent’s reliance on celebrity money, endorsements, solicitations, and other forms of that self-congratulatory alternative energy known as “star power” not only reveals the financial and ideological core of the Democratic party, but also the attitudes and agenda of the milieu in which Obama is most comfortable. Those attitudes are obnoxious and that agenda is totally unrelated to the daily struggles of millions of Americans—which is why no amount of bleating from Carrie Bradshaw will help the president in November. This was the week when the Obama campaign finally turned into an episode of Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live. It started with an endorsement literally from the devil herself, Anna Wintour, who—draped coquettishly in an Obama 2012 neckerchief—said she and Sarah Jessica Parker plan to host a dinner party for Barack and “Mee-shell Oh-bah-mah” to which two lucky raffle winners will be invited. Parker seconded the invitation during the MTV Movie Awards, where she called Obama “that guy.” Then came a trio of New York City fundraisers alongside Bill Clinton, including stops at the Upper East Side den of hedge fund billionaire Marc Lasry, the Waldorf Ballroom where rock star and presidential hitchhiker Jon Bon Jovi wheezed through some of his greatest hits, and the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway where the two presidents, Angela Lansbury, Doogie Howser, First Lady Abbey Bartlet, and Darth Vader took the stage in between performances of Mary Poppins. Munching on “grilled Coho salmon with sea beans, purple artichokes, and lemon caper sauce,” San Francisco super-lawyer and Obama donor Martin Checov said that “the other candidate’s travel schedule is no more oriented to the masses,” using language better suited to an aristocrat than a Democrat. Later, outside the Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, as CBS president Leslie Moonves and his reality-show host second wife “waited patiently for their wristbands” to hear Obama tell a dirty joke, the media mogul acknowledged that “partisanship is very much a part of journalism now,” but don’t get the wrong idea: “I run a news division. I’ve given no money to any candidate.” The Los Angeles Times reporter who related Moonves’ comments neglected to mention whether he was chuckling at his own blatant hypocrisy or simply so completely self-possessed that he told this joke un-ironically. It’s unclear which would be more damning. Running concurrently with the never-ending Obama benefit gala is the Michelle Obama show. Recently the first lady racked up IMDB credits with appearances on The View and The Late Show to complement turns on The Tonight Show, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Rachael Ray, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The BET Honors, The Biggest Loser, and the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Her husband, too, is no stranger to screens large and small, most recently “slow jamming” the news with Jimmy Fallon. Together, they are on track to be the most televised first couple of all time. Pretty soon they’ll be helping Ernie Brown Jr. catch snapping turtles on Call of the Wildman. Yet the Obamas have been slow to learn that the currency of celebrity depreciates easily. Their notoriety has been a sort of Roman candle, rising quickly before bursting into a hundred tiny flames. Experts unsure why they are dying about one a day Washington – Suicides are surging among America‘s troops, averaging nearly one a day this year – the fastest pace in the nation’s decade of war. The 154 suicides for active-duty troops in the first 155 days of the year far outdistance the U.S. forces killed in action in Afghanistan – about 50 percent more – according to Pentagon statistics obtained by The Associated Press. The numbers reflect a military burdened with wartime demands from Iraq and Afghanistan that have taken a greater toll than foreseen a decade ago. The military also is struggling with increased sexual assaults, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and other misbehavior. Because suicides had leveled off in 2010 and 2011, this year’s upswing has caught some officials by surprise. The reasons for the increase are not fully understood. Among explanations, studies have pointed to combat exposure, post-traumatic stress, misuse of prescription medications and personal financial problems. Army data suggest soldiers with multiple combat tours are at greater risk of committing suicide, although a substantial proportion of Army suicides are committed by soldiers who never deployed. The unpopular war in Afghanistan is winding down with the last combat troops scheduled to leave at the end of 2014. But this year has seen record numbers of soldiers being killed by Afghan troops, and there also have been several scandals involving U.S. troop misconduct. The 2012 active-duty suicide total of 154 through June 3 compares to 130 in the same period last year, an 18 percent increase. And it’s more than the 136.2 suicides that the Pentagon had projected for this period based on the trend from 2001-2011. This year’s January-May total is up 25 percent from two years ago, and it is 16 percent ahead of the pace for 2009, which ended with the highest yearly total thus far. Suicide totals have exceeded U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan in earlier periods, including for the full years 2008 and 2009. The suicide pattern varies over the course of a year, but in each of the past five years the trend through May was a reliable predictor for the full year, according to a chart based on figures provided by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner. The numbers are rising among the 1.4 million active-duty military personnel despite years of effort to encourage troops to seek help with mental health problems. Many in the military believe that going for help is seen as a sign of weakness and thus a potential threat to advancement. Kim Ruocco, widow of Marine Maj. John Ruocco, a helicopter pilot who hanged himself in 2005 between Iraq deployments, said he was unable to bring himself to go for help. “He was so afraid of how people would view him once he went for help,” she said in an interview at her home in suburban Boston. “He thought that people would think he was weak, that people would think he was just trying to get out of redeploying or trying to get out of service, or that he just couldn’t hack it – when, in reality, he was sick. He had suffered injury in combat and he had also suffered from depression and let it go untreated for years. And because of that, he’s dead today.” Ruocco is currently director of suicide prevention programs for the military support organization Tragedy Assistance Programs, or TAPS. Jackie Garrick, head of a newly established Defense Suicide Prevention Office at the Pentagon, said in an interview Thursday that the suicide numbers this year are troubling. “We are very concerned at this point that we are seeing a high number of suicides at a point in time where we were expecting to see a lower number of suicides,” she said, adding that the weak U.S. economy may be confounding preventive efforts even as the pace of military deployments eases. Garrick said experts are still struggling to understand suicidal behavior. “What makes one person become suicidal and another not is truly an unknown,” she said. Dr. Stephen N. Xenakis, a retired Army brigadier general and a practicing psychiatrist, said the suicides reflect the level of tension as the U.S. eases out of Afghanistan though violence continues. “It’s a sign in general of the stress the Army has been under over the 10 years of war,” he said in an interview. “We’ve seen before that these signs show up even more dramatically when the fighting seems to go down and the Army is returning to garrison.” But Xenakis said he worries that many senior military officers do not grasp the nature of the suicide problem. A glaring example of that became public when a senior Army general recently told soldiers considering suicide to “act like an adult.” Maj. Gen. Dana Pittard, commander of the 1st Armored Division, last month retracted – but did not apologize for – a statement in his Army blog in January. He had written, “I have now come to the conclusion that suicide is an absolutely selfish act.” He also wrote, “”I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess. Be an adult, act like an adult, and deal with your real-life problems like the rest of us.” He did also counsel soldiers to seek help. His remarks drew a public rebuke from the Army, which has the highest number of suicides and called his assertions “clearly wrong.” Last week the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, said he disagrees with Pittard “in the strongest possible terms.” The military services have set up confidential telephone hotlines, placed more mental health specialists on the battlefield, added training in stress management, invested more in research on mental health risk and taken other measures. The Marines established a counseling service dubbed “DStress line,” a toll-free number that troubled Marines can call anonymously. They also can use a Marine website to chat online anonymously with a counselor. The Marines arguably have had the most success recently in lowering their suicide numbers, which are up slightly this year but are roughly in line with levels of the past four years. The Army’s numbers also are up slightly. The Air Force has seen a spike, to 32 through June 3 compared to 23 at the same point last year. The Navy is slightly above its 10-year trend line but down a bit from 2011. As part of its prevention strategy, the Navy has published a list of “truths” about suicide. “Most suicidal people are not psychotic or insane,” it says. “They might be upset, grief-stricken, depressed or despairing.” In a report published in January the Army said the true impact of its prevention programs is unknown. “What is known is that all Army populations … are under increased stress after a decade of war,” it said, adding that if not for prevention efforts the Army’s suicide totals might have been as much as four times as high. Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently issued a video message to all military members in which he noted that suicides “are sadly on the rise.” “From private to general, we shoulder an obligation to look and listen for signs and we stand ready to intervene and assist our follow service member or battle buddy in time of need,” Battaglia said. The suicide numbers began surging in 2006. They soared in 2009 and then leveled off before climbing again this year. The statistics include only active-duty troops, not veterans who returned to civilian life after fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Nor does the Pentagon’s tally include non-mobilized National Guard or Reserve members. The renewed surge in suicides has caught the attention of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Last month he sent an internal memo to the Pentagon’s top civilian and military leaders in which he called suicide “one of the most complex and urgent problems” facing the Defense Department, according to a copy provided to the AP. Panetta touched on one of the most sensitive aspects of the problem: the stigma associated with seeking help for mental distress. This is particularly acute in the military. “We must continue to fight to eliminate the stigma from those with post-traumatic stress and other mental health issues,” Panetta wrote, adding that commanders “cannot tolerate any actions that belittle, haze, humiliate or ostracize any individual, especially those who require or are responsibly seeking professional services.”

On Wednesday night, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer to talk about the various threats that face the United States across the globe .. and whether she is going to replace Vice President Joe Biden on the national ticket in 2012.
Here’s the exchange:
BLITZER: “If the president of the United States says, ‘Madame Secretary I need you on the ticket this year in order to beat Romney,’ are you ready to run as his vice presidential running mate?”
CLINTON: “That is not going to happen. That’s like saying if the Olympic Committee called you up and said, ‘Are you ready to run the marathon would you accept.’ Well, it is not going to happen.”
So, you’re telling me there’s a chance?!
There is no rumor more impossible to knock down than the idea that President Obama might swap Clinton in for Biden at the last moment. Clinton has denied it in every way possible. Everyone around her insists it won’t happen. And yet, still the idea lives on.
Hoping to find out why the Clinton-as-vice-president rumor is so persistent as to be immune from facts, we sought a number of loyalists of the former New York senator seeking guidance.
“Clinton is catnip for cable,” said Phil Singer, who served as a senior aide on the former senator’s 2008 presidential campaign. “She’s a political icon with a job that keeps her above the fray and has numbers that most pols would kill for, so it’s not a surprise that people are talking.”
All true. Clinton does have stratospherically high poll numbers; a September 2011 CNN survey pegged her favorable rating at an eye-popping 69 percent. Just 26 percent viewed the formerly polarizing ex-first lady unfavorably. (Biden’s favorable/unfavorable score in that same poll was far less healthy: 42 percent saw him favorably, 41 percent unfavorably.)
Another Clinton ally was also quick to lay the blame for the ongoing Clinton-Biden swap at the feet of the media. “The press has got to stop writing about their favorite imaginary campaign and just cover the real one, which is plenty interesting,” said the source.
And yet the “blame the media” sentiment, while common, doesn’t get at the full picture of why Hillary on the national ticket still captivates. (Anecdote worth noting: At every talk the Fix gives — and we give them from time to time — one of the first questions is about the idea of a Clinton-Biden swap. We never bring it up.)
One Clinton supporter provided three reasons — none on which included the media — for why the idea of a veep swap remains alive and well.
“A) Her 2008 supporters remain fervent,” wrote the source in an email to the Fix. “B) Some 2008 Obama supporters have buyer’s remorse/guilt. C) Her numbers are off the charts because she has been out of politics and done a good job as Secretary of State”.
That seems to strike at the heart of the never-say-die-ness of the rumors about Clinton for vice president (or for president in 2016). She retains a loyal base within the party — these people are also loyal to Obama but hold Hillary more dear — and has, if anything, strengthened her image as a major political figure in the years since she took on the Secretary of State job.
Figuring out the gen­esis of the rumor — or at least the perpetual motion machine that keeps it circulating — doesn’t change the fundamental reality of why Clinton won’t be on the ticket.
To swap Biden, who has done nothing major wrong since coming onto the ticket back in 2008, for Clinton would reek of panic within the White House. It would be cast, almost certainly, as Obama throwing a hail mary pass — not exactly the message an incumbent president wants to be sending.
But remember, just because it won’t happen doesn’t mean people will stop talking about it. These are the Clintons after all. And this is politics.
Kissell joins Blue Dogs: The shrinking Blue Dog caucus is increasing its ranks — for the moment, at least — thanks to Rep. Larry Kissell (D-N.C.), who just joined the group of conservative-leaning Democrats. There are now 25 Blue Dogs, but five are retiring or running for higher office.
“I’ve always said I’m not much of a joiner, but I believe that a strong moderate presence is needed, and that’s why I have joined the Blue Dog Coalition,” Kissell said in a statement.
Redistricting has made Kissell’s reelection prospects much dicier, and belonging to a group that has often clashed with Democratic leadership can probably only help him in a new district that went 57 percent for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the 2008 presidential race. (Kissell’s old district was about 10 points more Democratic.)
New Hispanic data from GOP group: Resurgent Republic, a Republican polling organization, is out with a nifty new infographic designed to help conservatives reach out to Hispanic voters.
The GOP faces a significant deficit with a rapidly growing demographic that risks its future political prospects. Along with some interesting data, the Resurgent Republic site makes the case that Republicans can connect to Latinos on a number of issues.
Mourdock faces party investigation: Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is challenging Sen. Dick Lugar (R), is being probed by the state GOP after after allegations that the candidate improperly accessed the party’s voter files.
In an email obtained by the AP, Mourdock’s campaign manager asked staffers to “start pillaging email addresses” from Salesforce, a database used by Indiana Republicans.
It’s been a great couple weeks for Mourdock — an an internal poll Wednesday showed Mourdo­ck at 42 percent and Lugar at 41 — this investigation could do some damage to the tea party-backed candidate and bolster Lugar a bit.

Israeli politicians continue to call for Pollard’s release

Vice Prime Minister Moshe (Bogey) Ya’alon on Monday joined the chorus of Israeli leaders calling for the release of convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard.
“After 27 years, the time has come for the president of the United States to give the order to free Jonathan Pollard,” Ya’alon tweeted. “I pray for Jonathan’s health and hope to see him free soon, and return to his family and his people.”
Ya’alon’s comments come one day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres also remarked on the Pollard case.
“We are now celebrating the Festival of Freedom,” Netanyahu said. “I think that the time has come to release Jonathan Pollard. He has already been punished. Israel has already expressed its regret over the matter. On humanitarian grounds, he needs to be allowed to finish his life honorably and to be given his personal freedom around the Jewish people’s Festival of Freedom.”
Netanyahu said that he has done much to work for Pollard’s release and would continue to do so. Pollard, who worked as an intelligence analyst, was sentenced to life in 1987 after being convicted of spying for Israel. On average, U.S. citizens caught spying for allies tend to serve less than 10 years in prison, a fact that has prompted politicians in Israel and abroad to call Pollard’s sentence disproportionate and unjust.
Pollard, who suffers from ongoing health problems, complained of sharp pain on Friday and was rushed to a nearby hospital after prison medical officials were unable to ease his discomfort.
Pollard spent Passover Eve at the U.S. Federal Correctional Institution Butner, complaining of great pain. His wife, Esther, has remarked recently that she fears her husband will not survive his 27th year in prison. She has asked that “every Israeli household and every synagogue pray for Jonathan.”
Esther Pollard said on Monday her husband was conscious in the hospital, but receiving infusions because he is unable to eat or drink, Arutz 7 reported.
On Sunday, President Shimon Peres vowed to send a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama asking him to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.
Esther Pollard made her own appeal to Obama in March, issuing a public statement that said, “I would like to call on President Obama, from the bottom of my heart: Please listen to the voices of countless U.S. officials and the voice of the people of Israel and its leaders. Please commute Jonathan’s sentence and release him immediately.”
Netanyahu had asked President Bill Clinton to pardon Pollard during the negotiations on the Wye River Memorandum in 1998, and said that Clinton had agreed. The request, however, was overruled by then director of the CIA George Tenet, who was outraged by the prospect of Pollard walking free. Netanyahu also sent a personal request for Pollard’s release to Obama, and other high-ranking officials in the governments of both countries have made similar requests. Even after Pollard’s father, Dr. Morris Pollard, passed away in June 2011, Pollard was not allowed to attend his funeral.
According to Army Radio, Esther met President Shimon Peres at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem on Sunday and urged Peres to do what he can to free her husband. Esther said she did not want to become a widow and that “Jonathan’s strength is waning.” She said her husband “can’t withstand crisis after crisis” and that sending him back to prison after a stay in the hospital will be a “death sentence” for him.
According to a statement by the Office of the President on Monday, Peres told Esther in their meeting, “I am very disturbed and worried by the latest reports on Jonathan’s health. It is my duty as president to be an emissary and use all means at my disposal vis-à-vis the American administration to expedite Jonathan’s release.”
Peres went on to say “I intend to work quickly, taking into account the most serious considerations, and to appeal to President Obama and request that, in light of his severe health situation and after having sat for many long years in an American prison, he positively consider releasing Jonathan Pollard from prison.”
Knesset lobby chairman MK Uri Ariel, who was present at the meeting, gave Peres a letter which he asked the president to deliver to Obama on behalf of 81 MKs. The letter urges Obama to release Pollard.

FRIENDLY GHOST BABY BORN WITHOUT BLOOD

Little Olivia Norton has been hailed a miracle by doctors – after being born with no blood.

Oliva, now six months, was born completely white because she had such a low count of haemoglobin – the chemical which carries oxygen in red blood cells – that it could not officially be classed as ‘blood’.

She was given less than two hours to live but survived thanks to emergency transfusions which transformed her into a glowing healthy pink colour.

Mother Louise Bearman, 31, a barrister’s clerk, told of her shock at giving birth to a “ghost white” baby whose condition was so rare she will now feature in medical text books.

She said: “Olivia was my first baby, so I didn’t really know what to expect – but I certainly didn’t think she’d be that colour.

“I’ll never forget what the doctors notes said – ‘white and floppy’.

“There were some complications before the birth, which was incredibly scary.

“Then when Olivia came out so white we didn’t know what was going on.

“It was such a relief when the doctors explained what was happening, and it was quite amazing when they put the blood in her and she slowly turned this amazing pink colour.

“She’s such a lovely baby, it means everything having her at home now.”

Louise and her greengrocer partner Paul Norton, 36, of Witham, Essex, first noticed something was wrong when they didn’t feel Olivia kicking for three days.

They went to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, and when nurses failed to spot any movement after a 15 minute scan doctors ordered an emergency caesarean.

Olivia was born six weeks early at 8.20pm on Saturday September 10, weighing 5lbs 3oz with her heartbeat dipping dangerously low.

Haemoglobin is the protein which gives blood its characteristic red colour and ability to carry oxygen around the body.

When Olivia was born she had haemoglobin levels of just three out of a normal level of 18, which meant the plasma in her blood could not be classified as proper blood.

The newborn was rushed to the hospital’s special care baby unit where she was monitored for two weeks and had her strength and colour restored with two blood transfusions.

Neonatal nurse Sharon Pilgrim, yesterday (Mon) said in 20 years in the job she had never heard of such low haemoglobin levels.

She said: “It was a miracle she survived. She was incredibly pale when born and had difficulties breathing.

“There was no sign of blood loss prior to the caesarean or during the operation.

“It was only when we carried out further tests on Louise that we discovered the baby had lost blood directly into her mum’s blood circulation.”

Louise added: “The hospital staff were amazing and called Olivia the ‘miracle baby’ and said if I hadn’t come in she would not have survived.

“Doctors still don’t know why it happened, it is one of those freak things.

“I want mums to realise how important a baby’s movement is in checking they are healthy. You have to trust your maternal instinct.”
