Republican Tries to Stop U.S. from Sending Aid to Egypt

When Egypt overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak and started a path to democracy, the Obama administration pledged to help the process by giving Egypt $1 billion in aid, but a Congressional Republican from Texas is now trying to stop the administration from sending Egypt $450 million in emergency cash. Representative Kay Granger of Texas, chairwoman of the House appropriations subcommittee overseeing foreign aid, said she was going to try to block the distribution of the money. In a statement her office sent out as the administration was announcing the aid package to Egypt, Granger said the American relationship with Egypt “has never been under more scrutiny” than it has been since the election of President Mohamed Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. “I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time,” Granger’s statement said. One of the world’s largest organizations of Muslims, the Muslim Brotherhood has been viewed with suspicion by Republicans who believe the group is radical and dangerous. President Morsi rose to the leadership of Egypt out of the Brotherhood, meaning his entire presidency is viewed with suspicion by many. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking at a meeting of the Group of 8 nations in New York, said on Friday that after supporting the efforts in the Middle East for citizens to move their governments to democracy, the United States and the rest of the world had a commitment to help governments in places like Egypt, Libya and Tunisia become more stable. “The recent riots and protests throughout the region have brought the challenge of transition into sharp relief,” Clinton said, without mentioning the assistance to Egypt specifically. “Extremists are clearly determined to hijack these wars and revolutions to further their agendas and ideology, so our partnership must empower those who would see their nations emerge as true democracies.” The discussions in Washington moved from $1 billion in aid to a quicker package of $450 million instead, including $190 million immediately, because the country’s economic crisis has become acute, with an estimated budget shortfall of $12 billion.

Photo: Family HandoutCape Town – Never in a million years did the son of Cape Town’s Professor Cyril Karabus imagine that his father would be detained for manslaughter thousands of kilometres from home. “It’s unbelievable and difficult to comprehend what has happened in the last few weeks,” Michael Karabus told the Cape Argus on Thursday. “I am shocked and fearful for him and for us.” Michael spoke to the Cape Argus about his father’s imprisonment in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi Central Prison, on charges of manslaughter. Karabus, 77, of Claremont, was arrested on August 18, while in transit in Dubai to SA, from his son’s wedding in Toronto, Canada. Michael, 33, said the wedding day was more of a family reunion as this was the first day in years that all five siblings were together in one country with their parents. “It was a jovial event, we were all happy to be together. Having the trip end like this was terrible,” he said. Michael Karabus visited his father, Professor Cyril Karabus, in prison in Abu Dhabi. Karabus was detained at the Dubai airport while travelling with his wife and daughter. He was only allowed to keep his toothbrush and the clothes on his back. The rest of his luggage was brought home by his wife. Karabus specialises in paediatrics and medical oncology. He is a former professor of paediatrics at UCT and also headed the oncology and haematology unit at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. While working as a locum – for about six weeks – 12 years ago at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical Centre, in Abu Dhabi, UAE, he operated on a three-year-old cancer patient who later died of leukaemia. In his absence he was tried and found guilty of manslaughter. “Knowing my dad, if he was informed about the charges, he wouldn’t have fled the country. He would have wanted to stay to defend himself and the reputation he has spent a lifetime building… a reputation that’s been tarnished in one day,” Michael said. “It’s very strange that no one tried to contact him all this time and we are getting little information about why the effort wasn’t made. Before he left he did the official required handover with the doctor who was taking over from him. It’s surprising that no one picked up any wrong doing then.” Karabus is also charged with forging official documents. For both charges he faces three years and six months in jail. So far he has been denied bail three times. His next trial is set for next Wednesday, October 3. Karabus is being represented by a local law firm. “They are struggling to get him bail. If he does get it he will have to stay in Abu Dhabi for the duration which might take a year,” Michael said. “He will be better off outside prison, and then we can be sure he is taken care of. Even though he is getting all his medical supplies and food, at the end of the day it’s a prison… It’s not a good place for his health.” Karabus, who has a pacemaker for his heart, is being kept in the jail’s hospital wing because of his medical needs. Michael and his mother have spent a week with his father in Abu Dhabi. “It was difficult seeing him in a prison jumpsuit, behind a glass and talking to him through a transmitter. He is well respected in the medical field around the world… its ludicrous that he is in this situation,” he said. Michael said his father was sharing the hospital wing with 12 other prisoners. “As an academic, his life revolves around doing research and applying his mind. He is keeping himself occupied by playing chess and reading, to keep his mind fresh and occupied,” he said. At prison they were allowed to visit from 10am to 2pm. The ‘satan’ himself is back! Author of Satanic Verses, much beloved of the West, Salman Rushdie’s timing is perfect. He was, in recent times, the first to cast a stone at the jealously guarded glass dome of the Islamic world, whipping up a maelstrom of ferocious hate 24 years ago. For this, he thought, a Nobel Prize was in order. He lobbied hard for it. New York, his present home, was his launch pad. Hailed as the ‘beacon of sanity,’ by the West, he effortlessly ingratiated himself with the light-headed media (mind you there’s no dearth of it here) who crowned him their saviour against ‘Islamo-fascism,’ a term coined by his best friend and journalist, the late Christopher Hitchens. Today Rushdie is a weary old grouch. Melancholic (clinically depressed?), somewhat disorientated and out of shape, he got a warm ‘Welcome Back’ from The New York Times recently. It carried front-paged ‘I-am-the-victim’ stories about his hefty memoir of his years spent “under the shadow of assassination, deprived by the freedom of ordinary life and made to fear for himself and his family.” The Times was so excited on his return that on two consecutive days in its Arts section, there was Rushdie splashed all over. Then for night-time viewing, we watched Rushdie on ‘The Daily Show’ with Jon Stewart, the most watched late night TV entertainment. The host failed to tell his audience why Rushdie was his guest. Everything seemed hopelessly out of sync – from the audience not knowing who this portly gentleman was, in puffy pink, white hands and face, chuckling at them instead of looking at Jon Stewart! It was an unsettling sight, if not definitely weird. Rushdie showed his memoir to two of his four ex-wives before it went into print. Perhaps he wanted to protect himself from being sued by one of them. But when it came to pitching the Muslims against the West, as he did 24 years ago, Rushdie cared a fig! This shows the demonic mindset of a man who only cares for his celebrity status, not even his wives! He has been well-served by the pandering Western media’s hero-worship, applauding him for his insensitive remarks on the religion he was born into, as ‘freedom of speech and expression.’ The British who shielded Rushdie for ten years by spending millions on his safekeeping are getting a taste of ‘freedom’ themselves! Rushdie is as obnoxious as ever: he told CNN last Sunday that the news channel must air the blasphemous clips and cartoons because “it is news!” The fellow is as pompous and unrelenting as ever. Still, the Western chickens are now coming home to roost. I lived through it all. Post 9/11 in America. I was sick of Islam bashing. It was October 2002 that I began my column titled ‘Blasphemy!’ on these pages with the words of our Holy Prophet: “There will be a time when religion will become a hot coal in your hands or a foam on the ocean waves.” That time may have come. With a sick smirk on their faces, Rev Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham routinely attacked the Holy Prophet, insisting that he waged wars and killed innocent people. They called him a “terrorist.” The conservative right in America, including President Bush, wilfully embraced these two nuts. Helpless! That’s how Islamic scholar Akbar S Ahmed described the silence of the Muslims in America then. “There’s a serious crisis in the 1.3 billion Ummah straddling 55 nations, with one nuclear (Pakistan)…never before have Muslims been as helpless as today,” said Ahmed, who was at that time holding the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and was the Professor of International Relations at the American University, Washington DC. “What can you do when well-known heads of religious universities here call your Prophet horrible names or when the editor of National Review suggests ‘nuking Mecca.’” The Muslim world, Akbar Ahmad said, was suffering from an acute “identity crisis,” it lacked a common platform to fight the filth being perpetrated against Islam by the West. “There is not a single Muslim in the US Congress (in 2002), nor is there a Muslim media mogul here who can plug for us, nor are there any Islamic scholars in the campuses to silence such tacky sanctimonious chatter.” The hate against Muslims and sacrilegious statements against their Holy Prophet went unchallenged (as they do today) by the defenders of our faith. The Saudi silence was deafening. Chompings from Rev Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son, declaring Islam a “very evil and wicked religion” or heresy from evangelist Pat Robertson, “to think that (Islam) is a peaceful religion is fraudulent,” were remarks emblematic of a global epidemic to come, warned Ahmad. “Someone in Pakistan or some other part of the Islamic world where American troops are serving will want to take revenge and might shoot an innocent American,” were his prophetic words ten years ago. It has come true in Afghanistan today. “Such loose talk is not just the words of a fringe movement,” The Washington Post, in its stern editorial then said. Such damnation is equivocal of a nod from the White House since the damnifiers are among President Bush’s closest political allies. “On their noxious mix of religious bigotry and anti-Muslim demagoguery, Mr Bush’s silence is deafening…it therefore falls to the President to break his silence on their gross distortion and to put some distance between their rhetoric and his own professions of tolerance.” Akbar’s own voice of protest was drowned amid the din. He was hopelessly outnumbered and felt letdown by fellow Pakistanis, who had done extremely well for themselves, but not for their community. “I have been to their multi-million dollar homes and all they have to show is a signed photo of Hillary, Bill or Bush posing with them, forming the centre of their universe, a kind of shrine in their homes, as if by paying big bucks to their political campaigns (Republicans or Democrats) they think they are safe and will not be discriminated like fellow Pakistanis – who are profiled, detained and deported.” Akbar Ahmad blamed Rushdie, saying, “He has been instrumental in not only putting Islam in an awkward position, but provoking the worst kind of controversy around it. After 9/11, he wrote an article in The New York Times saying the crisis is about Islam and nothing else. I am afraid he has not helped in bringing dialogue or understanding.” This may be water under the bridge today. AHMADINEJAD’S CIRCUS ACT IS NO JOKE

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s annual United Nations freak show has commenced, and the press is eating it up. The Iranian leader held forth for a group of journalists this morning and didn’t disappoint. He claimed Jews have no historical roots in the Middle East and said Israel would disappear. He attacked Western freedom of speech and alluded to his past practice of denying the Holocaust while bragging that Western opposition to its nuclear program wouldn’t intimidate Iran. He will, no doubt, repeat and embellish these insults and threats as he has in the past when he addresses the General Assembly on Wednesday, which just happens to be Yom Kippur. But the problem with Ahmadinejad is not just that he says terrible things and revels in the attention he gets like any other foreign enfant terrible who shows up to speak at the circus-like atmosphere of the world body’s annual jamboree. It’s that not enough people take him seriously. It’s true that, as Seth wrote earlier, Ahmadinejad has been subjected to probing questions by some of our top foreign policy writers such as David Ignatius, but even those efforts are more focused on the chimera of outreach to Iran than on a clear-headed exploration of the nature of the regime. But on the whole, the main reaction to him is to act as if what he says is meaningless. Granted, it’s not easy for the sophisticated national press corps and the rest of our chattering classes to take seriously a person who looks, sounds and acts as if he is performing a satire on tyrants in the style of Charlie Chaplin or Sacha Baron Cohen. Indeed, the nastier and the crazier he gets, the harder it is for the journalistic world to treat him as anything other than a clown act. But he isn’t. His threats and insults must be listened to and taken seriously. The fact that they are not is no small measure why it has been so difficult to get much of the American foreign policy establishment, as well as the Obama administration, to treat Iran’s nuclear threat as something that requires urgent action rather than just more talk. It is true, as we hear from those who often urge us not to bother listening to what Ahmadinejad says, that he is not the supreme leader of his country. That is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds his post for life. but he is an important enough player in Iran that the regime felt it necessary to ensure his re-election in 2009 by cooking the books and then violently suppressing the protests that ensued. Ahmadinejad will, we are told, leave his office at the end of his second term. But while he has become the poster child for Islamist extremism, those journalists who will mourn what is supposed to be the end of his international career need to understand that far from being exceptional, his views perfectly reflect the political culture of the regime. The inciting of hatred against Jews and other religious minorities in Iran is, after all, not the work of one individual. It is the product of the ayatollah’s religious and political philosophy. The vast terrorist network that starts in Tehran and stretches to Damascus, Beirut, Gaza and anywhere else where Iran’s terrorist auxiliaries can reach (such as Bulgaria, where Israeli tourists were murdered this past summer) is not a figment of Ahmadinejad’s rhetorical flights of fancy. It is a real and deadly threat to the world. It is natural for even those who are genuinely outraged by Ahmadinejad to make a joke of his New York visit. We can all get a good laugh from the New York Post’s stunt in which they sent a Jewish-themed gift basket to his hotel including gefilte fish, bagels, and a brochure from a Holocaust museum and a free ticket to the show “Old Jews Telling Jokes.” But the day Iran gets its bomb because the United States spent years pretending that diplomacy would work, instead of setting red lines that might convince the regime the administration meant business, won’t be very funny. Perhaps then those Americans who treated Iran as merely an extension of Ahmadinejad’s comedy act will realize that his anti-Semitism and bluster was no joke.

Now, it’s not just that no one bats an eye at the amazing truth that the United States is beaming TV ads all over Pakistan apologizing for a derogatory Internet trailer for a nonexistent movie demeaning the being that Muslims call “The Prophet Mohammed.” No one in the MSM even slightly hints that doing the kowtow in the same country that sheltered Osama bin Laden to a group that reveled in, delighted in the terrorism against American civilians and still provides the framework for the terrorist Haqqani network, might be humiliating and an insult to the memory of the great Americans who were murdered just last week in Libya. No, we just take it in stride that our President and our Secretary of State will apologize to the people who hate us and want us dead. That’s not what I am referring to. I am referring to something worse: Have you noticed that in the past few years, and especially in the past few weeks since the murder of the Ambassador and his guards and colleague in Benghazi (a city that Erwin Rommel loved and whose inhabitants he praised), whenever the New York Times refers to Mohammed, they always call him, without quotation marks, The Prophet Mohammed, as if everyone with any sense understands that OF COURSE Mohammed is The One True Prophet and that it’s just understood that Mohammed is The Prophet. I see this in other news outlets and on TV, too. Sober-looking newsmen and newswomen mention Mohammed as The Prophet Mohammed. No ifs, ands or buts. I hear it on the BBC World Service, too. Now, if Muslims want to believe that Mohammed is The Prophet, God bless them. Fine and dandy. If anyone wants to believe that, good luck to him or her. But why does our mainstream media here in the USA, an overwhelmingly Christian country, refer to Islam’s prophet as “The Prophet”?Have you ever seen any major newspaper here in the USA refer to Jesus Christ as “The Son of God, God Incarnate, The Lord Jesus Christ”? Can you imagine the New York Times running a story about a crucifix resting in urine at an “art gallery” as an offense against “The Lord Jesus, Son of God”? Can you imagine any large newspaper in this country running a story about the Pope and referring to him as “The Holy Father, The Bridge Between Heaven and Earth”? Or about Mary, as “Holy Mary, Mother of God”? It would never happen. But somehow, probably because the people writing the articles and editing them or the producers on TV news shows fear being beheaded — and who doesn’t? — we have adopted in our media the Muslim assertion that Mohammed is The Prophet while giving other religious figures the back of our media hand. This is frightening. We are not supposed to be doing obeisance to a religious group that has many adherents who want us dead. We are not, as journalists, supposed to be labeling anyone as “The” Prophet. But somehow, it’s happening. The MSM has become a voice for Islam. Hitler saw it long ago. Terror and fear of violence can bring about amazing changes in people’s behavior. So can a misguided political correctness and self-loathing for the greatest nation on earth. I overheard a conversation between two women at a dining table just yesterday. The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three other American diplomats in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi Tuesday underscore how anti-authoritarian revolutions across the Arab world have unleashed extremist Islamist forces violently opposed to America and its ideals.

But Tuesday’s attack appears to have been instigated by another organization, Ansar al-Sharia, whose followers adhere to the extremely conservative Salafi movement that rejects Western influence and demands a return to strict Muslim practices of past centuries. Salafi forces appeared to be behind Tuesday’s violent protests at the US Embassy in Cairo as well as the Benghazi attack. The armed mobs were expressing their fury over an amateurish anti-Islamic video that denigrates the prophet Mohammed. Speaking in the White House Rose Garden Wednesday, President Obama eulogized the four lost Americans as exemplary agents of “freedom and human dignity,” even as he insisted that “no acts of terrorism will ever … eclipse the light of the values we stand for.” The US government is working with the Libyan authorities to “bring to justice” the perpetrators of the deadly attack, Mr. Obama said, adding, “Make no mistake: Justice will be done.” Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stood with Obama for the statement, reported earlier that in addition to Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith was killed in the attack. The names of the other two Americans killed were not immediately released. The anti-American protests and deadly assault on the Benghazi consulate occurred on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as Obama noted, saying Tuesday was “already a painful day” for Americans even before the events in Egypt and Libya. The reminder of Islamist extremists’ hatred for America will only darken the clouds that many Americans already saw building over the countries of the Arab Spring. The events will likely feed doubts about Egypt and the intentions of its new president, Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood. Mr. Morsi will make a White House visit later this month, and the threat of Islamic extremism – and how Morsi plans to address it – will now rise higher on the agenda. The death of a US ambassador in a country he played a part in liberating will very likely reinforce the Obama administration’s reservations about the disparate rebel forces fighting Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. One reason the US has not officially recognized the opposition forces arrayed against the Assad regime is lingering doubt about the degree to which extremist Islamist forces, including Al Qaeda, are involved in the anti-Assad fight. Libya’s deputy prime minister, Mustafa Abushagour, condemned Stevens’ killing as “an attack on America, Libya, and the free world,” but WINEP’s Mr. Clawson says he doubts those reassuring words will be backed up by action. Libya’s new authorities did nothing to stop violence earlier this year directed against the country’s moderate Sufi sect by Muslim extremists, he notes, much as attacks on manifestations of Western influence in Tunisia have gone unpunished. “If the Libyan authorities do nothing when those under attack are Libyans,” Clawson says, why should we expect that they will when the attacks are against us?”
