The criminal court in Baghdad handed down the sentence against Tariq al-Hashemi on Sunday. A record number of Muslim delegates are attending this year’s Democratic National Convention, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. An estimated 100 Muslim delegates from 20 different states are in Charlotte, the group said in a press release, which pointed out that only a “handful” of delegates attended the Republican National Convention last week in Tampa, “during which the RNC adopted a platform plank targeting the religious practices of Muslims,” the group’s press release said. There were 43 Muslim and Arab-American delegates at the DNC in 2008 and 25 in 2004, according to CAIR. “The more than doubling of Muslim delegates at this year’s Democratic National Convention is a direct result of their hard work and grassroots organizing within the Democratic Party,” CAIR Government Affairs Coordinator Robert McCaw said in the press release. “It is also a sign of the American Muslim community’s growing civic engagement and acceptance in the Democratic Party.” CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

Indian surrogate gave us babies we dreamed of… in return we changed her life
A GROWING number of desperate Brits are turning to Indian “baby farms” to make their dream of having a child baby come true. These controversial surrogacy clinics allow comparatively wealthy Brits to “rent a womb” or purchase eggs – commercial fertility services which are banned here in the UK. But with fees of between £14,000 and £20,000, fulfilling their dream in India comes at a price. The surrogates receive an average of £3,000 to £5,000, giving them the chance to escape crippling poverty. It’s estimated 25,000 children are born to surrogates in India every year – 50 per cent are commissioned by mainly western couples. Here, one couple tell their story exclusively to ALISON SMITH-SQUIRE.
The couple, from Stockport in Cheshire, used the services of a clinic in India to sidestep a UK ban on paying surrogates. Two Indian women at the Corion Clinic in Mumbai helped the McDuffs have their made-to-order babies, Andrew and Imogen. One was paid £1,250 for donating her eggs, which were fertilised with Chris’s sperm. The other earned about £4,000 to carry the embryos and the babies are now seven months old. Critics have slammed the “rent a womb” arrangements at Indian “baby factories”, claiming they exploit the local women, who are often very poor. Some reports claim surrogates live in grim dormitories far away from their families. But Joanne, 46, insists: “The money they’ve earned is likely to be life-changing. “Unfortunately, I never met our surrogate. But we know she was 26, a widow with two children. “Hopefully, through this she might be able to buy a house or afford to send her children to school. “What they’ve done has enriched our lives beyond all belief.” Paying a surrogate might seem an easy option. But for Joanne and her lawyer husband Chris, 49, the process was an emotional rollercoaster. When their surrogate was seven weeks pregnant, doctors realised she was expecting triplets. But because Indian laws forbid the surrogate to carry more than two babies, one life was terminated. Joanne says: “The decision was taken out of our hands. But it was still devastating to know that one of our healthy babies had to die.” They then endured weeks of worry and helplessness when their surrogate went into premature labour. Both babies were delivered at 28 weeks by Caesarean. But with Andrew weighing 2lb 9oz and Imogen 2lb 8oz, they spent two months in special care. Despite all the trauma, the McDuffs have no regrets. “Becoming a family has completed us,” says Joanne, a former human resources manager. She met Chris on an internet dating site — Joanne was in England and he was in Australia. They began trying for a baby after they married in June 2004. After a year with no success, their GP referred them for tests. Joanne says: “Everything was fine, so the doctors decided the reason I wasn’t conceiving was a combination of my age — I was nearly 40 — and being overweight. “There was no guarantee even if I lost weight that I’d conceive.” After spending thousands on unsuccessful IVF, they considered adopting. Deemed too old to adopt a young child in the UK, the McDuffs looked abroad. They were approved and put on the waiting list in Bulgaria. But after months had gone by with no child becoming available they looked into surrogacy, using Chris’s work bonus to fund it. Joanne says: “As I was now in my mid-forties I needed an egg donor, yet laws in the UK didn’t even allow us to advertise for one. It was too expensive in the United States, but affordable in India.”
So in June last year Joanne emailed the Corion Clinic. She says: “The doctor was very up-front about costs and explained it was a business arrangement for us and the surrogate, who sees it as a job. They pay the surrogate and there was no suggestion of us meeting her. “Donor eggs would cost us £1,250, the surrogacy approximately £4,000. Extras included having a Caesarean, a premium for twins and costs for special baby care.” They were then sent photos and details of 15 Indian egg donors. Joanne says: “Each one listed details such as their age, physical health, whether they had children, whether they’d been a surrogate before. “Eventually we got it down to two and I made the final choice on instinct. “We thought we’d get to choose the surrogate too. But the doctor explained that three women would be prepared with hormones and the healthiest would be chosen.” When Chris flew to India to give his sperm he walked past our surrogate in the clinic. “I thanked her profusely,” he recalls. “I imagined we’d meet her properly but we never did.” Couldn’t have kids … Chris and Joanne McDuffThree days later, four embryos were implanted in the surrogate’s uterus. After two weeks, the doctor emailed Joanne with the news that she was pregnant. Joanne reveals: “When we discovered it was triplets, we had a mixture of emotions. We knew only twins would be allowed. “It was a real low point because one of the babies was given a lethal injection at 14 weeks. Those are the rules, we had no say.” Worse was to come when at 23 weeks the surrogate showed signs of going into premature labour. Fortunately, doctors managed to stop the contractions. Joanne says: “Chris and I barely slept with the worry. It was terrible to be thousands of miles away. We felt helpless.” Then they got the call they had been dreading — the surrogate was being rushed for an emergency Caesarean. Then two photos of newborn Andrew and Imogen arrived by email. “They were healthy but very premature and were rushed into special care,” says Joanne. Difficulties in getting visas to fly to India meant it was a week before the McDuffs could see their babies. “It was a terrible time,” says Joanne. “Our babies were fighting for their lives and we were unable to be there with them. “When I did see them I cried because they were so beautiful and I was overwhelmed with emotion to have them at last. “We’d have loved a photo of our surrogate with the twins and we longed to thank her personally. “Even though the babies were not biologically hers, we felt sure she must have bonded. And it must have been hard for her to give birth and leave empty-handed. But by then she’d gone home.” Fortunately Imogen, nicknamed Mimi, was able to come home after six weeks with her brother Andrew following a fortnight later. Seven months on, Joanne says: “The twins are beginning to sit up, cooing and laughing. “Although still tinier than babies of the same age, they are catching up fast.” She and Chris, who are currently based in Dubai for his work, intend to tell the twins all about their birth. Joanne says: “We haven’t ever tried to hide where our children have come from. Friends and family have been very supportive. They know what we’ve been through.” She is also setting up a foundation to advise others on Indian surrogacy. She adds: “Not everyone will approve of what we did, but we are happy that in return for giving us the chance to be parents, we gave the surrogate and the egg donor the sort of financial help that in India could be life-changing. “We only hope they know how grateful we are to them. “And we only have to look at our gorgeous twins to know all the agonies we went through were so worthwhile.”

Military operation against the militants in a Pakistani tribal region will displace nearly 600, 000 people, an international aid agency said on Thursday. Save the Children estimates that over 600,000 people in total will be displaced from the Khyber agency if security operations continue, of which over 300,000 are expected to be children. The recent influx of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from the region began in January and intensified in mid-March as operations in the area increased. Since then, approximately 63,000 families have been displaced and moved to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The recently displaced families join an estimated total of 144, 104 displaced families from previous conflicts in the area, which have been ongoing since 2009. According to United NationsHigh Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), approximately 1,200 individuals are currently being registered at the Jalozai camp daily compared to up to 10,000 during mid-March. Government authorities anticipate that the IDPs will remain displaced till the end of the year, thereby requiring humanitarian aid for the newly displaced people. Only 28 percent of the Humanitarian Operational Plan (HOP) devised last year for addressing the needs of displaced communities from FATA has been raised to date. Continued funding shortfalls will result in severe constraints on the ability of humanitarian agencies to deliver lifesaving aid to the affected population, Save the Children said in its update. Over 90 percent of new IDPs are staying off-camp, living in rented spaces or with host families. It is imperative to assist the off-camp IDPs, as very limited relief services are reaching them. As most IDPs are women and children who belong to a conservative culture, they are unwilling to live in camps and many are unable to access relief services. IDPs living with host communities say that they don’t expect to go home within the next twelve months. As host communities struggle to cope with the influx of IDPs, local media is reporting that the security operation in Khyber Agency is intensifying and more people are fleeing their homes in search of safety.

It’s official. This summer, Russian president Vladimir Putin will be taking a trip to Israel, his first since 2005. It’s the consummation of a relationship that has been fostered by Israel’s Moldovan-born foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, who also recently described Israeli-Russian relations — after 20 years of diplomatic contact — as “very positive.” That may be, and the fact that Putin and Lieberman speak the same language (literally, that is) probably has helped to solidify a certain rapport between the two countries. But it would be a serious mistake at this particular moment to accord the Russian president the honor of a state visit. Not simply because he is turning into more and more of a despot every day, flouting the rule of law and human rights, but also because Russia’s reckless and immoral actions in the Middle East could have negative consequences for Israel. On the domestic front, Putin, who recently slipped back into the post of president, has been ruthless in suppressing dissent, far surpassing any measures that were taken in the 12 years since he first took the presidency. Almost immediately, he passed a law imposing crippling fines on anyone taking part in unauthorized demonstrations. And, in early June, his efforts took a turn toward the Soviet. In order to undermine a planned protest in Moscow, the Kremlin carried out a series of coordinated raids against well-known opposition figures, ransacking their homes, confiscating money, and detaining them for hours. Even if one were to argue that this is Putin’s internal affair and that Israel has no grounds for protesting the actions of a supposedly democratically elected president, there is still the matter of Syria. Russia’s devastating role in the human tragedy unfolding in Israel’s neighborhood is undeniable and difficult to overestimate. With a couple of horrific civilian massacres in the past few weeks — and an increasing number of dead children — the world seems finally focused on the crisis. This hasn’t brought resolution any closer. Military intervention is still opposed by nearly everyone as too unpredictable an option. But even if the West is still moving too slow, Russia has only made matters exponentially worse. It has obstructed even the most symbolic attempts in the United Nations to condemn Basher al-Assad’s regime. And Putin’s continued support for Assad — not just with diplomatic backup, but with weapons as well, including attack helicopters — has only made the Syrian dictator that much more intransigent. For economic reasons, because it doesn’t want to cede its last foothold in the Middle East, and because Putin (like China’s leaders) sees the issue of sovereignty as trumping human rights, Russia has become an accomplice to a terrible amount of bloodshed of innocents. No one has a good answer for how to solve the problem of Syria, but the first step, unquestionably, is to isolate Assad. That can’t happen as long as Putin stands by his side. Perhaps surprisingly, Lieberman in Israel has been able to articulate the damage being done. He recently offered humanitarian aid to Syria through the International Committee of the Red Cross. “The Jewish state cannot sit by and do nothing while these atrocities are taking place in a neighboring state and people are losing their entire world,” Lieberman said. “Even though Israel cannot intervene in events occurring in a country with which it does not have diplomatic relations, it is nevertheless our moral duty to extend humanitarian aid and inspire the world to put an end to the slaughter.” Beautiful words and sentiments. Unfortunately, Lieberman doesn’t seem to understand that his friend Vladimir is aiding and abetting that slaughter. On Lieberman’s last trip to Moscow, this past December, while he was praising Putin’s election as fair and democratic (a judgment that a senior foreign ministry official anonymously denounced as “disgraceful”), Russia was at that moment reportedly delivering Yakhont cruise missiles to Syria. There was no word then or now from Lieberman about his own “moral duty.” In addition to morality, there is also the not insignificant question of national interest. Israel has nothing to gain from such instability and violence across one of its borders and seemingly much to gain from an ousted Assad (which would also be a serious setback for Iran). But it’s not too late for Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make the most dramatic statement possible about their principles. Israel should not associate itself with a leader like Putin, who worries only about perpetuating his own power. Watching the bloodshed in Syria, Lieberman said, “We are human beings first, before we are politicians, leaders, commentators and journalists.” It’s time, then, to act like a human being. Ann Coulter speaks at Republican Party fundraiser in Rochester

A national Republican commentator spoke to about 150 GOP faithful at a party fundraiser in Rochester on Wednesday. Ann Coulter’s visit sparked an attack on Maggie Brooks by her Democratic opponent, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. Louise Slaughter’s campaign calls Ann Coulter the patron saint of Republican extremism, but Coulter makes no apologies for stirring things up. Ann Coulter charmed her audience with her well-known wit and biting comments, mostly about Democrats and President Obama. And now that President Obama has a record, she predicted that many independent voters who voted for him in 2008 won’t this time around. Coulter said, “President Obama is someone they’d really like to like except for his policies. He’d be a great next door neighbor.” About 150 people paid $150 each to hear Coulter, who picked apart a range of Democratic positions on the issues including the President’s Affordable Care Act. Coulter said, “So now our entire health care system will be run by the people who run the Department of Motor Vehicles. You know those incredibly long lines at the DMV? Now imagine you’re standing in one of those lines wearing a cloth robe that’s open in back. That’s Obamacare.” About Republican candidate Mitt Romney, Coulter said she was an early supporter. Coulter said, “Romney really is the perfect candidate, not only the perfect candidate but the perfect president we need right now.” Coulter’s appearance here prompted Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s campaign to call her an extreme right-wing shock pundit. And Slaughter asked her Republican opponent Maggie Brooks to denounce the fundraiser. But Brooks says she attended the luncheon as a loyal Republican supporting her party and that federal campaign laws prohibit her campaign from benefiting from the fundraising event. And she called Slaughter an extremist for her comments about Republicans and Nazis. Rep. Louise Slaughter said, “It’s sort of like an old German Nazi movie.” Maggie Brooks, Monroe County Executive, said, “I certainly don’t agree with everything that Ann Coulter has said. I certainly don’t agree with everything I’ve heard Louise Slaughter say. And you want to talk about extremes, this coming from a woman who called Republicans Nazis and said that we’re all coming to Washington to kill women.” News10NBC called Congresswoman Slaughter’s campaign headquarters, but they did not make her available to answer questions Wednesday. A spokesman said her Nazi comment was referring to Republican legislation which she called extreme.
