By GRAHAM SMITH and MARTIN ROBINSON

A judge today said nine men preyed on white girls as young as 13 for sex ‘because they were not part of your community or religion’ as he jailed them for a total of 77 years.

The men, all but one originally from Pakistan, were sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court after they were convicted of luring up to 47 girls into sex with drink, drugs, fast food and free taxi rides over a number of years.

One girl was subjected to a horrific ordeal when she was raped by 20 men in a single night.

Opening his sentencing remarks, Judge Gerald Clifton said: ’All of you treated (the victims) as though they were worthless and beyond respect.

‘One of the factors leading to that was the fact that they were not part of your community or religion.

‘Some of you, when arrested, said it was triggered by race. That is nonsense. What triggered this prosecution was your lust and greed.’

The defendant was previously banned from court because of his threatening behaviour and for calling the judge a ‘racist b******’.

Simon Nichol, defending, earlier said that his client did not wish to attend the sentencing hearing and had ordered the barrister not to put any mitigation before the judge on his behalf.

Mr Nichol said: ‘He has objected from the start for being tried by an all white jury and subsequent events have confirmed his fears.

‘He does not take back any of the comments he has made to your honour, to the jury, or to anyone else in the court during the course of the trial.

‘He believes his convictions have nothing to do with justice but result from the faith and the race of the defendants.

‘He further believes that society failed the girls in this case before the girls even met them and now that failure is being blamed on a weak minority group.’

The judge called the defendant an ‘unpleasant and hypocritical bully’.

Takeaway worker Kabeer Hassan, 25, of Oldham, Greater Manchester, was jailed for nine years for rape and three years, concurrently, for the conspiracy conviction.

The 59-year-old ordered the first victim to have sex with Hassan as a ‘treat’ for his birthday. He raped the girl, who was then aged 15.

Taxi driver Abdul Aziz, 41, of Rochdale, was sentenced to nine years for conspiracy and nine years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The married father-of-three took over from the 59-year-old as the main trafficker of the victims and was paid by various men to supply girls for sex.

Married father-of-five Abdul Rauf, 43, of Rochdale, was jailed for six years for conspiracy and six years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The religious studies teacher at a local mosque asked a 15-year-victim if she had any younger friends and would drive some of the girls to other men, who would use them for sex, despite knowing they were underage.

Mohammed Sajid, 35, of Rochdale, was sentenced to 12 years for rape, six years for conspiracy, one year for trafficking and six years, all concurrent, for sexual activity with a child.

Known as ‘Saj’, he would regularly ply victims with alcohol before having sex with them at his flat, where groups of men would gather and ‘pass around’ the girls. He will be deported back to Pakistan following the conclusion of his sentence.

Adil Khan, 42, of Rochdale, was given eight years for conspiracy and eight years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Khan, who is married with one child, fathered the child of a 13-year-old victim who believed she was in love with him.

Mohammed Amin, 45, of Rochdale, was sentenced to five years for conspiracy and 12 months, concurrently, for sexual assault.

He was a driver for Eagle Taxis for 14 years and was known as ‘Car Zero’. He is married with school aged children.

Abdul Qayyum, 44, of Rochdale, was jailed for five years for conspiracy. He was a driver for Streamline Taxis in Middleton, Greater Manchester, and was known by the name ‘Tiger’.

Illegal immigrant Hamid Safi, 22, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years for conspiracy and one year, concurrently, for trafficking.

He sneaked into the UK on a lorry in 2008 and claimed to have fled Afghanistan because his uncle was murdered by the Taliban. He was released from a detention centre in Birmingham in March 2009 when he moved to Rochdale.

Safi will be deported back to Afghanistan following his sentence.

ISLAMIC LEADER: ‘PAKISTANI COMMUNITY ELDERS IGNORED GROOMING’

Warning: Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation said 'there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race'Warning: Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation said ‘there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race’

The leader of the Ramadhan Foundation has accused Pakistani community elders of ‘burying their heads in the sand’ on the issue of on-street grooming.

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the group, said police should not let the ‘issue of race’ stop them from addressing the issue.

The Ramadhan Foundation is a Manchester-based moderate Muslim youth group that works for ‘peaceful co-existence and dialogue for all communities’.

Mr Shafiq said: ‘There is a significant problem for the British Pakistani community, there is an over-representation amongst recent convictions in the crime of on-street grooming, there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race as this is central to the actions of these criminals.

‘They think that white teenage girls are worthless and can be abused without a second thought; it is this sort of behaviour that is bringing shame on our community.

‘I urge the police and the councils not to be frightened to address this issue, there is a strong lesson that you cannot ignore race or be over sensitive.’

He added: ‘I have been overwhelmed by the support the Ramadhan Foundation has been given by young people for our campaign on child grooming but concerned that community elders are once again burying their heads in the sand, this concerns us all and we must speak out.

‘The community elders need to learn from the reaction of young people and reject any attempt to silence the reaction from our community.’

He said the police would need to ‘reflect on their failures’ in this case.

‘Finally the far-Right and fascist movements are not welcome to Rochdale, we reject their division and hatred and it has no place in a tolerant and diverse society.

‘These criminals have brought shame on themselves, their families and our community’

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation

‘We will learn lessons from this case but not allow outsiders to divide us,’ Mr Shafiq added.

But Asian Labour MP Keith Vaz warned that blaming a particular race or religion for grooming young girls for sex risks opening up a Pandora’s box over race relations.

Mr Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, said the root causes of the criminality against young girls needs to be addressed and the focus taken off the ethnic origin, religion or geographical location of those involved.

Mr Shafiq also paid tribute to the bravery of the victims. ‘Without their contribution justice would not have been possible,’ he said.

‘Today’s guilty verdicts are to be welcomed and I hope the message goes out that if you engage in these crimes, you will be caught and brought to justice.

‘These criminals have brought shame on themselves, their families and our community.’

Judge Clifton said the men had been convicted for their ‘grave’ sexual offences, which involved ‘grooming and sexually exploiting’ several young girls.

He said: ‘In some cases those girls were raped callously, viciously and violently.

‘Most of you were many years older than they were.

‘They were going through a period in their lives full of difficulty and misery. One had left her parents’ home, another had been in care for many years.

‘You attracted them to your company by flattery, free food, and alcohol.

‘Some of you acted to satiate your lust, some to make money out of them.

‘All of you treated them as though they were worthless and beyond all respect.’

The sentencing came after it was today claimed that fears they would be branded racist meant that police and social services left an Asian paedophile ring free to rape up to 50 white girls.

The sentencing came after former Labour MP for Keighley Ann Cryer said that the authorities ignored complaints about them because they were ‘petrified of being called racist’.

These innocent girls were ultimately ‘betrayed’ and left to live lives of ‘untold misery,’ because of political correctness, she said.

‘This is an absolute scandal. They were petrified of being called racist and so reverted to the default of political correctness,’ she said.

‘They had a greater fear of being perceived in that light than in dealing with the issues in front of them.’

Speaking to MailOnline the former MP said that for more than a decade she was dealing with the problem, and said police fear being seen as racist so may avoid difficult crimes like those carried out by the Rochdale gang.

‘Forces have been accused of being institutionally racist. That sort of thing sticks,’ she said.

‘If you do say things like that about any police force then they will be majorly careful to avoid being being put in line for criticism like that. It may well be that they then steer clear of the tragic events that we are talking about. All because they want to be politically correct.

Not guilty: Liaquat Shah arrives at Liverpool Crown Court for a previous hearingNot guilty: Liaquat Shah arrives at Liverpool Crown Court for a previous hearing

‘Ten years ago I was dealing with cases like this in my area but Greater Manchester police say they knew nothing about it.’

Mrs Cryer has long campaigned to tackle the issue of Asian sex gangs in Britain as well as stopping forced marriages.

‘It might be that in certain areas they are very protective of their own girls but they think that white girls are easy and go for them.

‘I know that some gangs targeted homes with firebombs to force parents to let their daughters out of the house.

‘Often the young are not allowed to have Asian girlfriends because of their culture so focus on white girls instead.

‘In my area it was Asian girls I campaigned to help and help them get out arranged marriages they did not want to be in. But I did receive hostility from certain people in the community who thought I should not be talking about this. But I felt very strongly that I should.’

But chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz claims that the issue has nothing to do with race or being Asian.

‘I do not believe it is a race issue,’ he told BBC Radio 4′s Today Programme.

‘I think we do need to look into this but I think it’s quite wrong to stigmatise a whole community.

‘These are vile crimes, we all agree they should go to jail. But it’s a big leap to suddenly go from that position to the position where you say “it is Asian men and Pakistani men”.

‘We shouldn’t be afraid to discuss this. It’s quite right that we should discuss it but those who do just discuss it, they ought to have evidence. What the BNP is saying is that this is a crime that is committed by Pakistani men and Asian men – that is wrong, that is where I say there ought to be caution.’

As many as 47 vulnerable girls were given alcohol, gifts and money before being passed around to have sex with ‘several men a day, several times a week’.

At least one victim was forced to have sex with 20 men in one night when she was drunk, police said. Two became pregnant as a result of their horrifying ordeal – one of whom was only 13 and had an abortion.

But it can be revealed that a golden opportunity to smash the ring was missed nearly four years ago after a 15-year-old girl told police she had been raped in 2008.

Over the next two years, dozens of white teenagers were abused by older men in the gang, which was centred around takeaways in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

A review of the earlier case in 2010 sparked a wave of arrests and charges.

The case is the latest involving men of predominantly Asian origin picking up young girls for sex.

Former Home Secretary Jack Straw last year accused some Pakistani men of seeing white girls as ‘easy meat’ for sexual abuse following the jailing of another grooming gang in Derby. The latest case was conducted against a backdrop of racial politics.

Tensions were exploited by far-Right groups who waved anti-Muslim placards outside Liverpool Crown Court and marched on the takeaways named in the case three days after the trial started.

A barrister for the men was punched outside court by a protester, while tweets by BNP leader Nick Griffin sparked extraordinary claims – later dismissed – of a ‘mole’ inside the jury room.

Despite this, police were at pains to play down the racial element last night.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle, of Greater Manchester Police, insisted that getting ‘hung up on race and ethnicity issues’ detracted from what was simple child sex abuse.

‘There is no evidence to say they were targeted because they were white,’ she said. ‘They were targeted because they were there.’

But some campaign groups argue that to tackle the problem it is vital to recognise that a minority within their community prey on young, white girls.

‘There is a particular problem with groups of Pakistani men who think white girls are worthless,’ said Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Ramadhan Foundation. ‘They think they can use and abuse these girls in this abhorrent sort of way and then discard them.’

The missed chance to save the girls came in August 2008 when the 15-year-old was arrested after smashing the counter at one of the takeaways.

She told officers that two men had subjected her to repeated sexual abuse, plying her with vodka before raping her.

One was the ringleader of the group – a 59-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons. But despite evidence which included DNA swabs from her underwear, a senior CPS lawyer ruled there was no prospect of conviction and the pair were never charged.

As a result, members of the gang were allowed to continue their abuse.

The investigation was only revived after Nazir Afzal was appointed chief crown prosecutor for North West England and examined the file.

Twelve men were arrested in 2010 but many of the girls were too scared to give evidence in court or regarded the men as their boyfriends despite the huge age gap. However five bravely agreed to testify against their abusers.

Girls who were reluctant to have sex were held down and raped, the court was told, while some deliberately drank themselves into oblivion to blot out what was happening.

One said she fell asleep after being given alcohol, waking to heavy breathing on her neck as she realised she was being raped.

VICTIM, 15, REVEALS HOW SHE WAS ‘LET DOWN’ BY POLICE

A victim of the ring said she was 'let down' by police and the Crown Prosecution Service (file picture)A victim of the ring said she was ‘let down’ by police and the Crown Prosecution Service (file picture)

A victim of the ring said she was ‘let down’ by police and the Crown Prosecution Service because the issue of Asian gangs grooming young white girls was ‘unheard of’ at the time.

The girl, who was 15 when she was targeted by the gang, reported the abuse to police in August 2008 but the CPS decided not to prosecute because they did not believe a jury would find her ‘credible’.

After reporting the abuse she suffered for four more months at the hands of the gang and continued to be forced into having sex by her ‘friend’ – a teenage girl who was acting as a pimp for the men.

She said the problem got ‘worse’ after telling the police.

‘I felt let down. But I know that they (police) believed me… but… because they said to me at the end that something should have been done but the CPS just would not – what’s the word? – prosecute is it?

‘It’s like, then, in 2008 it weren’t really heard of… Asian men with white girls.

‘It was just unheard of. I’ve never heard of it. Now it’s going on everywhere. You think of Muslim men as religious and family-minded and just nice people. You don’t think… I don’t know… you just don’t think they’d do things like that.’

The girl, now 20, only escaped the gang in December 2008 when she fell pregnant and moved away. She was then made to wait until August 2009 for the CPS to tell her they were not taking the case to trial.

She called the men who abused her ‘evil’ and said she hopes they pay for their crimes.

‘They ripped away all my dignity and all my last bit of self-esteem and by the end of it I had no emotion whatsoever because I was used to being used and abused daily,’ she said.

‘It was just blocked out, it was just like it wasn’t me any more. They just took everything away and I just think hopefully they’ll pay for what they’ve done.’

Another gave evidence of being raped by two men while she was ‘so drunk she was vomiting over the side of the bed’. One 13-year-old victim became pregnant and had the child aborted.

Victims of the abuse were introduced to the men by an older white girl known as the ‘Honey Monster’. She didn’t face charges because lawyers considered her a victim of sexual grooming herself.

After the case, chief prosecutor Mr Afzal said he hadn’t had to think twice about reviewing the decision not to press charges and apologised to the girl who blew the whistle. ‘She was let down by the whole system,’ he said.

Former chief of prisons and head of children’s charity Barnados Martin Narey said there was a clear link between Asian men and grooming in the north.

‘Undeniably it seems to me, in the north there is a very significant over-representation of Asian men – frequently Pakistani men – in these terrible crimes,’ he told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme.

‘My experience in running prisons for seven years is that sex offenders actually are overwhelmingly white and I think there’s a lot of evidence now that those guilty of online grooming are disproportionately white.

‘But for this particular sort of crime, the street grooming and trafficking of girls in northern towns… there is very troubling evidence that Asians are overwhelmingly represented in the prosecutions for such offences. That is not to condemn a whole community – most Asians would absolutely abhor what we’ve seen in the last few days in the Rochdale trial.’

Abuse trial that was hijacked by far-Right

  • Tweet by BNP leader Nick Griffin nearly led to the case being abandoned
  • Trial delayed after two legal counsels attacked outside court
A tweet from BNP leader Nick Griffin almost caused the trial to collapse when it led to allegations of the jury having a 'far-Right bias'A tweet from BNP leader Nick Griffin almost caused the trial to collapse when it led to allegations of the jury having a ‘far-Right bias’

The far-Right attempted to make political capital out of the case – to the extent where it was even  suggested a juror may have been passing information to extremists.

Angry protesters demonstrated outside Liverpool Crown Court  during the three-month trial.

In one demonstration, a defence barrister and solicitor were assaulted as they left for lunch. They later resigned from the case.

The trial was delayed as a result and the first jury discharged.

Three days into the trial, a 100-strong mob attacked takeaways in Heywood, near Rochdale.

Police were pelted with bricks and windows smashed.

One officer was injured and on February 25, the English Defence League held a protest in Hyde, Greater Manchester.

Matters took a further twist when the jury retired to consider its verdicts last week.

British National Party leader Nick Griffin tweeted: ‘News flash: seven of the Muslim paedophile rapists found guilty in Liverpool’.

At that stage no verdicts had been given, but the trial judge was told Mr Griffin was correct about the deliberations inside the jury room, leading to suspicions of a mole.

Eight of the defence lawyers called for the jury to be discharged, claiming there must have been ‘two-way communication’ between someone in the jury room and the Far Right.

But the judge ruled there was no evidence any juror had acted improperly after inquiries revealed that all electronic equipment had been banned from the jury room.

Mr Griffin could face further action, however, as his posting may have breached strict court orders barring reporting of verdicts before the end of the case.

The 59-year-old ringleader of the gang later branded both the judge and jury ‘racist’ and was eventually barred from returning to court.

After the verdicts were delivered yesterday, he asked his barrister, Simon Nichol, to repeat his allegations.

Last night there was a heavy police presence in Heywood as efforts were taken to avoid a repeat of the violence which broke out on the streets in February.

Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz today slammed the BNP.

‘The criminal justice system should not dance to the tune of the BNP. From the start they were protesting outside and saying it was a race issue. I do not believe it is,’ he said.

Here is Some Disney for you from Michael Finnegan, Los Angeles Times:
After more than 35 years in the Senate, Richard G. Lugarof Indiana was ousted Tuesday by a tea party challenger in a Republican primary that showed how hard it is for a veteran lawmaker known for his ability to compromise to win reelection in the current political environment. The 80-year-old senator, a leading voice for his party on foreign policy, was pummeled for weeks by Republican rival Richard Mourdock for his breaches with conservative orthodoxy. Among them: Lugar’s support of citizenship for some illegal immigrants and his votes to confirm President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Lugar’s loss marks a triumph for the tea party in a campaign season otherwise shaping up as less favorable to a conservative insurgency than the 2010 election that swept many of the movement’s candidates into office and fueled a Republican takeover of the House. defeat, Lugar told supporters Tuesday night that he hoped Mourdock would win November’s general election. But in a written statement lamenting the decline of bipartisanship, Lugar warned that Mourdock would achieve little in the Senate if he failed to seek common ground with Democrats. “In effect, what he has promised in this campaign is reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party,” Lugar said. The Republican Party, he warned, risks being relegated to minority status if it continues to discourage its representatives from holding independent views or engaging in constructive compromise. “Parties don’t succeed for long if they stop appealing to voters who may disagree with them on some issues,” he said. For his part, Mourdock told supporters that Republicans in Indiana were sending a message that they want the party’s senators “to take a more conservative track.” “It’s about ideas,” he said. “It’s about the direction of the Republican Party” and of the country. Lugar’s lopsided defeat affirms the downside of Senate longevity at a time when voters, in Indiana as elsewhere, are in a surly mood over prolonged economic hardship. A fixture of the Republican establishment in Washington since the 1970s, Lugar lives in McLean, Va., but was recently forced to explain why his voter registration listed his residence as an Indianapolis house that he no longer owned. Lugar was also poorly prepared to fight for survival. “Lugar hasn’t had a race in decades,” said Jennifer Duffy, senior editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. “Not years. Decades.” Indiana was one of four states holding elections Tuesday. In Wisconsin, voters picked Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as the Democrat to challenge Gov. Scott Walker next month in a recall spurred by the Republican incumbent’s fight with organized labor. Walker defeated Barrett in the 2010 governor’s race. In presidential primaries, Mitt Romney coasted to victory in Indiana, North Carolina and West Virginia. Even with most of the combined 107 delegates at stake Tuesday, Romney remained short of the 1,144 needed to clinch the nomination, but is likely to hit that milestone this month. For Lugar, the challenge mounted by Mourdock came as a rude surprise. A former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Lugar is one of the nation’s most prominent advocates of arms control treaties. With former Sen. Sam Nunn, a Democrat, Lugar helped set up a program to secure and dismantle nuclear weapons in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other nations that were once part of the Soviet Union. When he ran for president in 1996, Lugar stressed nuclear security. He quit the race after finishing seventh in the Iowa caucuses and fifth in the New Hampshire primary. By and large, Lugar’s voting record has been conservative, but he has often worked with Democrats — a major liability this year in his reelection campaign. In 2005, Lugar and Obama, then a freshman senator, traveled together to Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan to inspect nuclear facilities. He and Obama later cosponsored a measure expanding the Lugar-Nunn program to deactivate weapons and keep terrorists from acquiring them. In a statement released Tuesday night by the White House, Obama praised Lugar for working with Democrats to get things done. “Sen. Lugar comes from a tradition of strong, bipartisan leadership on national security that helped us prevail in the Cold War and sustain American leadership ever since,” Obama said. Another Democrat, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, called Lugar’s defeat a tragedy. “This is a tough period in American politics, but I’d like to think that we’ll again see a United States Senate where Dick Lugar’s brand of thoughtful, mature and bipartisan work is respected and rewarded,” Kerry said. In his campaign, Mourdock, 60, branded Lugar “Obama’s favorite Republican.” A two-term Indiana state treasurer, Mourdock attacked Lugar for supporting a 2006 bill that offered a path to legalization for undocumented workers. He also faulted Lugar for backing a more recent measure that would have provided citizenship to some children of illegal immigrants if they served in the military or attended college. Mourdock’s campaign won the support of FreedomWorks, Washington’s main tea party group, along with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform. But one of the biggest blows to Lugar was a major advertising campaign run against him by the Club for Growth, a Washington organization that seeks to shrink government. In his own campaign ads, Mourdock portrayed Lugar as a Washington insider who had grown out of touch with Indiana. “When Dick Lugar moved to Washington, he left behind more than his house,” an announcer said in a Mourdock TV ad. “He left behind his conservative Hoosier values.” In November, Mourdock’s Democratic opponent will be Joe Donnelly, a congressman who would have faced a tougher challenger in Lugar. For Republicans, said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, “I think it’s harder to hold the seat with Mourdock, but I think they will hold the seat.” Republicans are hoping to win control of the Senate in November by maintaining control of the party’s 47 seats and gaining four more.

25 years ago while was setting my office. Two thugs popped in without any further notice or an appointment. I recognized the first man. He was all over the news; he was Vigilante Ambassador Mr. Hussain Al Sayegh who was fired for misusing his country legation in the west to provide arms to Iran. Another thug is Hani Tarazi Owner of Saba & Partners a Palestinian freemason Black Jesuit (I apologize for Palestinians & whoever offended. It’s a moment of truth. I don’t mean to defame no one here). The meeting took about 3 hours. The ambassador said that he has to go to entertain his Boss’s jockey who won the derby that time. While seeing them off the elevators. Both of them in all disrespect whispered to me “you are doing very well with Government of Dubai; your business will never grow unless you agree to give us a cut out of your business.” As naïve patriot citizen and lawful kid just come out of college replied: “go away. My business is legitimate of cut throat profit. I trust my government”.

I underestimated the influence of these thugs in Dubai. I was an idiot. I should taken them more seriously. In less than a year:

·All my business stopped.

·Receivable payment stopped.

·1200 agencies taken away.

·Fired disgracefully from federal government.

·My skilled Staff taken away and reemployed in the government and forced to testify against me.

·Spend 25 years to settle debts.

·Government bank auctioned my family building for $3,000,000.00 to settle $500,000.00 loan interest.

They falsified facts in the statement of accounts pending for payment and convinced some one up there. That Obaid Karki trading with the government is overprized. So he ordered to stop Obaid Karki payment. Take away all his agencies. Accuse Obaid Karki of theft. Fire Obaid Karki from the Federal Government and destroy his good reputation. Until today for the past 25 years unemployed Obaid Karki is paying debts and yet $10 Millions dues are in government of Dubai custody. ADCB bank just auctioned Obaid Karki family building to collect $3,000,000.00 for a loan of $500,000.00 only.

Hillary Clinton for vice president: The rumor that won’t die then goofy for state secretary
Here is Some Mindsteroid Must-Read:
On Wednesday night, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer to talk about the various threats that face the United States across the globe .. and whether she is going to replace Vice President Joe Biden on the national ticket in 2012.
Here’s the exchange:
BLITZER: “If the president of the United States says, ‘Madame Secretary I need you on the ticket this year in order to beat Romney,’ are you ready to run as his vice presidential running mate?”
CLINTON: “That is not going to happen. That’s like saying if the Olympic Committee called you up and said, ‘Are you ready to run the marathon would you accept.’ Well, it is not going to happen.”
So, you’re telling me there’s a chance?!
There is no rumor more impossible to knock down than the idea that President Obama might swap Clinton in for Biden at the last moment. Clinton has denied it in every way possible. Everyone around her insists it won’t happen. And yet, still the idea lives on.
Hoping to find out why the Clinton-as-vice-president rumor is so persistent as to be immune from facts, we sought a number of loyalists of the former New York senator seeking guidance.
“Clinton is catnip for cable,” said Phil Singer, who served as a senior aide on the former senator’s 2008 presidential campaign. “She’s a political icon with a job that keeps her above the fray and has numbers that most pols would kill for, so it’s not a surprise that people are talking.”
All true. Clinton does have stratospherically high poll numbers; a September 2011 CNN survey pegged her favorable rating at an eye-popping 69 percent. Just 26 percent viewed the formerly polarizing ex-first lady unfavorably. (Biden’s favorable/unfavorable score in that same poll was far less healthy: 42 percent saw him favorably, 41 percent unfavorably.)
Another Clinton ally was also quick to lay the blame for the ongoing Clinton-Biden swap at the feet of the media. “The press has got to stop writing about their favorite imaginary campaign and just cover the real one, which is plenty interesting,” said the source.
And yet the “blame the media” sentiment, while common, doesn’t get at the full picture of why Hillary on the national ticket still captivates. (Anecdote worth noting: At every talk the Fix gives — and we give them from time to time — one of the first questions is about the idea of a Clinton-Biden swap. We never bring it up.)
One Clinton supporter provided three reasons — none on which included the media — for why the idea of a veep swap remains alive and well.
“A) Her 2008 supporters remain fervent,” wrote the source in an email to the Fix. “B) Some 2008 Obama supporters have buyer’s remorse/guilt. C) Her numbers are off the charts because she has been out of politics and done a good job as Secretary of State”.
That seems to strike at the heart of the never-say-die-ness of the rumors about Clinton for vice president (or for president in 2016). She retains a loyal base within the party — these people are also loyal to Obama but hold Hillary more dear — and has, if anything, strengthened her image as a major political figure in the years since she took on the Secretary of State job.
Figuring out the genesis of the rumor — or at least the perpetual motion machine that keeps it circulating — doesn’t change the fundamental reality of why Clinton won’t be on the ticket.
To swap Biden, who has done nothing major wrong since coming onto the ticket back in 2008, for Clinton would reek of panic within the White House. It would be cast, almost certainly, as Obama throwing a hail mary pass — not exactly the message an incumbent president wants to be sending.
But remember, just because it won’t happen doesn’t mean people will stop talking about it. These are the Clintons after all. And this is politics.
Kissell joins Blue Dogs: The shrinking Blue Dog caucus is increasing its ranks — for the moment, at least — thanks to Rep. Larry Kissell (D-N.C.), who just joined the group of conservative-leaning Democrats. There are now 25 Blue Dogs, but five are retiring or running for higher office.
“I’ve always said I’m not much of a joiner, but I believe that a strong moderate presence is needed, and that’s why I have joined the Blue Dog Coalition,” Kissell said in a statement.
Redistricting has made Kissell’s reelection prospects much dicier, and belonging to a group that has often clashed with Democratic leadership can probably only help him in a new district that went 57 percent for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the 2008 presidential race. (Kissell’s old district was about 10 points more Democratic.)
New Hispanic data from GOP group: Resurgent Republic, a Republican polling organization, is out with a nifty new infographic designed to help conservatives reach out to Hispanic voters.
The GOP faces a significant deficit with a rapidly growing demographic that risks its future political prospects. Along with some interesting data, the Resurgent Republic site makes the case that Republicans can connect to Latinos on a number of issues.
Mourdock faces party investigation: Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is challenging Sen. Dick Lugar (R), is being probed by the state GOP after after allegations that the candidate improperly accessed the party’s voter files.
In an email obtained by the AP, Mourdock’s campaign manager asked staffers to “start pillaging email addresses” from Salesforce, a database used by Indiana Republicans.
It’s been a great couple weeks for Mourdock — an an internal poll Wednesday showed Mourdock at 42 percent and Lugar at 41 — this investigation could do some damage to the tea party-backed candidate and bolster Lugar a bit.

FRIENDLY GHOST BABY BORN WITHOUT BLOOD

April 6, 2012

Little Olivia Norton has been hailed a miracle by doctors – after being born with no blood.

Oliva, now six months, was born completely white because she had such a low count of haemoglobin – the chemical which carries oxygen in red blood cells – that it could not officially be classed as ‘blood’.

She was given less than two hours to live but survived thanks to emergency transfusions which transformed her into a glowing healthy pink colour.

Mother Louise Bearman, 31, a barrister’s clerk, told of her shock at giving birth to a “ghost white” baby whose condition was so rare she will now feature in medical text books.

She said: “Olivia was my first baby, so I didn’t really know what to expect – but I certainly didn’t think she’d be that colour.

“I’ll never forget what the doctors notes said – ‘white and floppy’.

“There were some complications before the birth, which was incredibly scary.

“Then when Olivia came out so white we didn’t know what was going on.

“It was such a relief when the doctors explained what was happening, and it was quite amazing when they put the blood in her and she slowly turned this amazing pink colour.

“She’s such a lovely baby, it means everything having her at home now.”

Louise and her greengrocer partner Paul Norton, 36, of Witham, Essex, first noticed something was wrong when they didn’t feel Olivia kicking for three days.

They went to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, and when nurses failed to spot any movement after a 15 minute scan doctors ordered an emergency caesarean.

Olivia was born six weeks early at 8.20pm on Saturday September 10, weighing 5lbs 3oz with her heartbeat dipping dangerously low.

Haemoglobin is the protein which gives blood its characteristic red colour and ability to carry oxygen around the body.

When Olivia was born she had haemoglobin levels of just three out of a normal level of 18, which meant the plasma in her blood could not be classified as proper blood.

The newborn was rushed to the hospital’s special care baby unit where she was monitored for two weeks and had her strength and colour restored with two blood transfusions.

Neonatal nurse Sharon Pilgrim, yesterday (Mon) said in 20 years in the job she had never heard of such low haemoglobin levels.

She said: “It was a miracle she survived. She was incredibly pale when born and had difficulties breathing.

“There was no sign of blood loss prior to the caesarean or during the operation.

“It was only when we carried out further tests on Louise that we discovered the baby had lost blood directly into her mum’s blood circulation.”

Louise added: “The hospital staff were amazing and called Olivia the ‘miracle baby’ and said if I hadn’t come in she would not have survived.

“Doctors still don’t know why it happened, it is one of those freak things.

“I want mums to realise how important a baby’s movement is in checking they are healthy. You have to trust your maternal instinct.”

This file picture taken on May 24, 2010 shows Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gesturing while speaking at a press conference in New Delhi. India's government and the army categorically denied on April 4, 2012 a front-page report by a newspaper detailing how troop movements towards the capital in January had "spooked" the cabinet. "These are alarmist reports and should not be taken at face value," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists at parliament.

NEW DELHI — India’s government and the army denied on Wednesday an “alarmist” front-page newspaper report detailing how troop movements towards the capital in January had spooked the cabinet.
The Indian Express claimed the unnotified night-time deployments had sparked concern about a possible coup at a time when relations between the head of the 1.13-million-strong army and the government are strained.
“These are alarmist reports and should not be taken at face value,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists at parliament.
The newspaper said the government had taken measures as a precaution on January 16-17, including asking lookouts to identify the soldiers involved and ordering police to slow traffic on the highways into the capital.
“Absolutely baseless,” Defence Minister A.K. Antony told reporters in response to the claim the government had been worried, adding: “They (the army) will not do anything against Indian democracy. They are true patriots.”
He said the deployments by a column of mechanized infantry travelling in armoured personnel carriers and a separate column of paratroopers were “usual, natural activities”.
Indian Army spokesman Colonel Jagdeep Dahiya told AFP that the story in the respected broadsheet was “baseless and incorrect”.
“Certain troops’ movements which have been reported were part of routine training as per standard operating procedures,” he said.
The Express cleared its front-page for the report under a dramatic three-line headline stating: “The January night Raisina Hill (the political establishment) was spooked: Two key Army units moved towards Delhi without notifying Govt.”
Quoting several unnamed sources, it said that the defence minister and the prime minister were informed and the troops were ordered to halt. They were then sent back to their bases in states neighbouring the capital area.
The army explained afterwards that the deployments were to test the capabilities of the infantry to operate in fog and for the paratroopers to link up with their transports.
While these were initially “viewed with skepticism”, the Express reported, the defence ministry had since come to the conclusion it was “a false alarm caused by some non-adherence to standard operating procedures by the army.”
The incident was important because it underlined the distrust between the army and the government, the paper stressed in the story which was jointly written by its high-profile editor Shekhar Gupta.
India’s army chief V.K. Singh has had a public falling out with his civilian bosses sparked by his bid to stay in office for an extra year.
In January, the same day as the manoeuvres detailed in the Express, he took his case to the Supreme Court, asking for his birth date registered in army records to be changed. He claimed the birth date had been wrongly recorded.
The army chief faces mandatory retirement this May at the age of 62.
Since this dispute, he has embarrassed Antony by detailing how he was offered a $2.8 million bribe in 2010 to fix a supply contract, a complaint which was not followed up by the government.
Last week, a letter he wrote to the prime minister complaining how India’s tank fleet lacks ammunition, its air defences are “97 per cent obsolete” and its elite forces need essential weapons was leaked to the media.
General Singh denounced the leak as treason and urged “ruthless” treatment of any persons found responsible.

PAKI COURT SENTENCED THE BENEFICIARIES OF KERRY-LUGAR-BERMAN BILL $15B OSAMA’S 2 WIVES & 2 DAUGHTER TO 45 DAYS IN JAIL AND $110 FINE

The family members of slain terror leader Osama bin Laden were sentenced by a Pakistani court to 45 days in jail and a 10,000 rupee ($110) fine, media reports said.
The penalties were given to three of bin Laden’s wives and two of his daughters on Monday, reported The Express Tribune, citing the family lawyer. They were convicted of entering and residing illegally in Pakistan.
Lawyer Muhammad Aamir told the publication that the family members’ sentences began officially on March 3, when they were formally arrested and charged with entering Pakistan illegally and residing there.
“The interior secretary has been directed to arrange their deportation,” Aamir said, adding that “I think it will be completed probably in two weeks.”
Zakarya Ahmad Abd al Fattah, the brother of bin Laden wife Amal, confirmed with the Tribune that the sentences were handed down.
“The court has also given direction to the government to arrange the necessary documents for their earliest repatriation, so that they can go to their own country as soon as possible,” Fattah said.
Bin Laden’s family was detained by Pakistan last May after the al-Qaeda leader was shot and killed in a raid on his compound in Abottabad.

Ku Klux Klan looking for Zimmerman

Ku Klux Klan looking for Zimmerman

Ann Coulter went on Laura Ingraham‘s show and — when the topic turned to Trayvon Martin — she called out the “lynch mob” that’s been going after George Zimmerman. The last time we saw this type of thing on a regular basis, she said, was with the Ku Klux Klan, an “outgrowth” of the Democratic Party.
The frenzy in the media, and attacks toward Zimmerman, Ingraham said, are “beyond irresponsible.” Something “violent could happen toward an innocent person,” she said. Coulter agreed, saying “it’s shocking.” She continued:
“I mean it is a lynch mob. This isn’t how we try cases in this country. And you know, the last time you saw this sort of thing on a regular basis was of course again from the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party’s outgrowth, the KKK. So, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that we get this from the Democrats. They have never bought into the criminal justice system where you have, you know, grand jurors and a procedure where evidence is vetted, and police look at it and prosecutors and grand jurors.”
Not everything goes to trial, she said. “How about we have a trial on what Chris Matthews’ IQ is?” Coulter quipped. “No, that doesn’t fit in with what the criminal justice system is designed to address. And if the cops and the prosecutor look at a case, look at the evidence and conclude that we don’t have probably cause for an arrest, there won’t be a trial. It’s just a cop-out to say, ‘Well all we want is a trial.’”
