The Secretary of State has decided, consistent with the law, to revoke the designation of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) and its aliases as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) under the Immigration and Nationality Act and to delist the MEK as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224. These actions are effective today. Property and interests in property in the United States or within the possession or control of U.S. persons will no longer be blocked, and U.S. entities may engage in transactions with the MEK without obtaining a license. These actions will be published in the Federal Register. With today’s actions, the Department does not overlook or forget the MEK’s past acts of terrorism, including its involvement in the killing of U.S. citizens in Iran in the 1970s and an attack on U.S. soil in 1992. The Department also has serious concerns about the MEK as an organization, particularly with regard to allegations of abuse committed against its own members. The Secretary’s decision today took into account the MEK’s public renunciation of violence, the absence of confirmed acts of terrorism by the MEK for more than a decade, and their cooperation in the peaceful closure of Camp Ashraf, their historic paramilitary base. The United States has consistently maintained a humanitarian interest in seeking the safe, secure, and humane resolution of the situation at Camp Ashraf, as well as in supporting the United Nations-led efforts to relocate eligible former Ashraf residents outside of Iraq.

Journalists couldn’t risk having Obama’s campaign slogan “Osama is dead” being amended with “and so is our ambassador.” After our ambassador to Libya was murdered in a preplanned, coordinated attack on our embassy last week, proceeded by an attack on our embassy in Egypt (and followed by attacks on our embassies in Yemen, Indonesia, Tunisia and Lebanon); Romney criticized Obama administration for “sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt.” He was referring to a statement put out by our Cairo embassy before ambassador’s murder, criticizing an American filmmaker whose YouTube trailer was alleged provocation for attacks. Attacks that happened to occur on anniversary of 9/11. NFM (Non-Fox Media) uniformly denounced Romney’s criticism and pronounced his campaign finished. Obama administration insisted that Romney had his “facts” wrong: Obama had absolutely nothing to do with statement embassy staff was freelancing and, even if White House had approved it, it was a good statement because riots were caused by movie trailer, and furthermore, embassy statement was issued before riots even began. This is known as an argument in alternative: “I didn’t break into that house, and if I did, I didn’t steal silver, and if I did, I only got twenty bucks for it.” If statement were issued before our embassy in Cairo was attacked, then what was administration responding to? This provoked another round of hysterical denunciations from media. At a private gathering, Romney told donors that Obama had a lock on 47 percent of voters “who pay no income tax” and “believe government has a responsibility to care for them.” This was deeply offensive to people who pay no income tax and believe government has a responsibility to care for them. But no matter how much media belch out usual clichés out of touch, insensitive, racist, not one of us, Thurston Howell, etc. etc. all most people heard was: FORTY-SEVEN PERCENT OF AMERICANS PAY NO INCOME TAX? A friend of mine who spent time in Russia during ’70s told me that whenever a Russian would bring up extensive coverage of Watergate, he’d sigh, thinking he’d have to explain that American political system was not as corrupt as commissars would have it. But all they ever wanted to ask him was: “Do all Americans have such nice shoes?” lesson is: You can’t always control what audience notices. Thanks to myopia of our one-party media, most journalists are firmly convinced that voters will be appalled by Romney’s description of 47 percent of Americans as supporting Obama because they pay no income tax. (Yes, head-up-their-butts journalists in charming little burg of Manhattan are complaining that Romney isn’t connecting with ordinary people.) But only people shocked by Romney’s statement of fact are those who would never vote Republican under any circumstances. Everyone else is saying, “Is it really as high as 47 percent?” as media impotently shouts, “No, you idiot! That’s not point!” There’s going to come a time, in not-distant future, when it’s 51 percent paying no income tax. And when that happens, party of big government will never lose another election. America will become indistinguishable from Western European nanny states except there will be no America to protect us. Media happen to love party of big government with all their heart, so from now until election, no matter what Romney says, they plan to be scandalized.

Secret Proceedings in Wang Lijun Trial Start Early The trial of former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, who launched a major political scandal after making a surprise visit to the U.S. Consulate in February, started proceedings a day early. Foreign reporters in Chengdu, where the trial in being held, confirmed that secret hearings started Monday, despite the official trial start date of Tuesday. It resulted in the removal of his boss, senior politician Bo Xilai, from the communist leadership and the roiling of the Communist Party leadership as it prepares a delicate transfer of power to younger leaders. He reports: “The trial started at 8.30 this morning and finished at about noon,” Ms Wang [Wang Lijun's defense lawyer], who is no relation to her client, said. “The trial has two parts, private and public. Today is the private part because it involves state secrets – it was about the two charges of defection and bending the law for his own ends,” added Ms Wang who is the director of the Beijing L&A law firm in Shenyang.  Police and security forces surrounded the People’s Intermediate Courthouse in Chengdu, southwest China, but a local government official claimed the security presence was merely a “rehearsal” and denied Mr Wang’s trial had started. Si Beibei, a local government official, said the trial would only start on Tuesday and would only last one day. “It is hard to say how it went. I cannot comment right because the second part is still to come. Tomorrow will deal with the other charges. I cannot comment on any other details at the moment,” Ms Wang said. Phillips reported being closely watched by security while in the city: Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal published a report which includes previously-unknown details about Wang’s visit to the U.S. Consulate in February, during which he provided information to U.S. officials that implicated Gu Kailai, wife of the powerful Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai, in the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Gu Kailai has since been sentenced to a suspended death sentence and Bo Xilai has been removed from his position, though his fate remains unclear. From the Wall Street Journal report on Wang’s time in the U.S. Consulate: As Chinese police cars surrounded the building, Mr. Wang slipped U.S. diplomats the cellphone number of an accomplice, according to several people familiar with what happened. It would lead to evidence, he said, implicating the wife of Bo Xilai, one of the most senior leaders in the Chinese Communist Party, in the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. During a 30-hour standoff, U.S. officials weighed the information he claimed to have against the damage that granting him asylum could do to U.S.-Chinese relations. In the end, diplomats said Mr. Wang didn’t formally seek asylum, and he left the consulate and was taken into Chinese custody. But the drama didn’t end there. In a previously undisclosed development, the U.S. handed the cellphone number over to British diplomats and gave them instructions on how to track down the information from Mr. Wang’s mysterious accomplice. The instructions included setting up an email account under a designated name with a popular Chinese email and messaging service. The British set up the account and texted the cellphone number. People involved gave conflicting accounts of the timing and whether the accomplice responded. For reasons that are unclear, the British never received the promised documents. The revelation that he claimed to have an accomplice who may still be prepared to spill secrets could complicate China’s efforts to dictate the narrative about Messrs. Wang and Bo. The new details about Mr. Wang’s stay in the consulate and its aftermath also shed light on how U.S. and British authorities responded to the unusual episode that triggered China’s worst political crisis in more than two decades.
