Muslim Brotherhood Claims Victory in Egypt Poll

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is claiming a victory for its presidential candidate Mohammed Mursi, even before votes are officially calculated from this weekend’s election. The results of the second and final round of Egypt’s presidential elections are not expected to be announced until Thursday. However, Mursi’s supporters have already claimed that he won with 52.5 percent of the vote, compared to 47.5 percent for rival candidate, ex-prime minister Ahmed Shafiq. “Doctor Mohammed Mursi is the first Egyptian president of the republic elected by the people,” said the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, in a tweet. In a press conference on Monday morning, Mursi’s campaign manager Ahmed Abdelati said that votes at 13,000 polling stations had already been counted. “It’s a moment that all the Egyptian people have waited for,” he said, in comments to Al Arabiya TV. However, the result was immediately contested by supporters of Shafiq. “We are astonished by this bizarre behavior which amounts to a hijacking of the election results,” said Mahmud Barakeh, a campaign official to Shafiq, in comments to AFP news agency. The claim from Mursi’s supporters came just hours after Egypt’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) issued a constitutional document giving military rulers sweeping legislative powers. SCAF had given legislative power to the country’s elected parliament in January. However, last Thursday a constitutional court dissolved that parliament, citing irregularities in the electoral process. The document issued by SCAF on Sunday means that the ostensibly interim military rulers will retake legislative power, and that new parliamentary elections will not be held until a constitution is drawn up by an appointed assembly. The document also grants SCAF an effective veto power over any article in the new constitution it deems to be contrary to the interests of the country. The move has raised concerns by analysts over the power of any newly elected president. “With this document, Egypt has completely left the realm of the Arab Spring and entered the realm of military dictatorship,” said Hossam Bahgat, a prominent human rights activist, in comments to the Washington Post. “This is worse than our worst fears,” said Bahgat.

Both of them in all disrespect whispered to me “you are doing very well with Government of Dubai; your business will never grow unless you agree to give us a cut out of your business.” As naïve patriot citizen and lawful kid just come out of college replied: “go away. My business is legitimate of cut throat profit. I trust my government”.

The paper also reported resignations were expected within the next 24 hours. The Wall Street Journal listed those leaving as: Ina Drew, who since 2005 has run the risk-management unit that is responsible for the losses; Achilles Macris, who is in charge of the London-based desk that placed the trades; and trader Javier Martin-Artajo, a managing director on Mr. Macris’s team. There has to come a time though when investors realize that Dimon’s big mouth will cost the bank even more money so he may also be on borrowed time. He’s not there yet and for the moment, there are plenty of fools (including the retired GE CEO Jack Welch who squeezed GE for a lavish retirement plan) who lapped up Dimon’s TV appearance yesterday. The letter begins: “We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS that manmade carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data.
“With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.

Pakistani officials confirmed Wednesday that Industrial and Commercial Bank of China had withdrawn from plans to head a consortium that would finance the $1.6-billion Pakistani portion of the cross-border pipeline, apparently over concern that the bank could be excluded from the U.S. economy.

The move suggests that even Chinese companies, which have staunchly resisted U.S. and European efforts to punish Iran for its nuclear program, are beginning to bend to the sanctions on Tehran. China’s unwillingness to fully cooperate had been one of the greatest challenges to the international effort to put economic pressure on Iran.

China’s decision is a setback for the Pakistani government, which fears that dire energy shortages could lead to civil unrest as well as economic strain.

Pakistani officials said they would press ahead with the project, which would deliver more than 750 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from Iran’s South Pars field. They said they would find replacement financing.

China, long notorious for being the world’s most lavish state practitioner of the death penalty, has announced that it will put an end to the practice of harvesting the organs of executed prisoners by 2017.  China Daily reports:

China has pledged to abolish the practice of taking transplant human organs from condemned prisoners within three to five years, a senior health official said Thursday.

China is creating a national organ donation system to reduce its reliance on organ donations from death row inmates and encourage donations from the public, Huang Jiefu, vice minister of health, told a conference in east China’s city of Hangzhou.

“The pledge to abolish organ donations from condemned prisoners represents the resolve of the government,” he said.

Health officials have said insufficient organ donations by the public mean that the majority of transplanted organs in China come from executed prisoners – but only with prior consent.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that about 1.5 million people in China need transplants, but only some 10,000 transplants are performed annually.

The Wall Street Journal provides some context and statistics surrounding the harvesting of prisoner’s organs in China, and mentions the viewpoint of some who are awaiting organ donations:

Due in part to traditional beliefs and distrust of the medical system, voluntary donations are rare in China, where the need for organs far exceeds the supply. An estimated 1.5 million people in China are in need of organ transplants annually, while only 10,000 receive them, according to government statistics.

An estimated 65% of China’s annual organ donations come from prisoners, according to human-rights advocacy organization Amnesty International.

Some patients awaiting transplants say abolishing inmate donations will be akin to a death sentence for them, according to a report published in the medical journal Lancet in 2011. The report said the number of patients requiring transplants is rising due to the rise in chronic and noncommunicable diseases in the country.

PRI’s The World talks about the subject with their China correspondent Mary Kay Magistad. In the interview they discuss the details of the practice, and talk a bit more about the conflicting “traditional beliefs” mentioned in the Wall Street Journal article:
